Poverty Bay Standard. Published Every Evening. GISBORNE: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 21, 1882.

With our present issue we close the quarter and end the first year since taking over the paper. We sincerely and heartily thank our patrons for the very liberal support we have met with on all during the past twelve months. Not alone have the advertising public accorded us a fair share of support, but our readers have also shown their apppreciation of the Standard as the ever increasing circulation proves. It is now three months since we ventured upon issuing a daily evening paper, and certainly have no reason to regret having done so. The success which we have achieved has very greatly exceeded our expectations, and has proved to us that we were right in our opinion that the public would support a reliable, fearless and outspoken journal, published not alone in the interest of the district but in the interest of everyone having a wrong to be righted. As in the past so in the future we shall, without hesitation, expose the “ways that are dark and the tricks that are vain,” of the man, be he rich or poor, who endeavors to grind another under his heel for his own agrandisement. This, so long as we can wield a pen we shall never sit by calmly and watch or submit’to. Anyone having a grievance which ought to be made public, will have only to come to us, but must remember we deal only with facts. Again we beg to thank those who havejso kindly favored us with their support.
