CORRESPONDENCE.

We do not hold ourselves responsible for ths opinions expressed by our correspondents]. :o: OPENING SEASON OF THE GISBORNE ROWING CLUB. Sir, —I have heard that it is the intention of the above Club to open the rowing season in the usual manner to-morrow afternoon, but up to the present time I have been unable to hear of any preparations to carry out the same. Surely they have a committee to make arrangements, and endeavor to see them carried out in a proper manner. If these would take a hint from an old rowing man, they would at once have the boats out and the Captain should then pick his crews for the several boats which are to take part in the opening, so that he will have matters in fair order for Saturday afternoon. I am sorry to see our young oarsmen growing up so slack of spirit in the noble art of rowing. Their Captain should use his influence and try to stir them up a bit, and I trust to see him come more to the front in this particular line than he has shown himself up to the present, the old saying is “ a new broom sweeps clean,” so far as the “new broom” of the club is concerned, I do not think he has started to sweep at all. I hope Mr Captain will not be offended, and trust he will wake up to his work, and show himself capable of carrying out his duties iu a proper spirit, and to do this he must be well backed up by his committee, —I am Ac., Old Member Oxford Club. Gisborne, 19th Oct., 1882. [This letter should have appeared yesterday—Ed. 3.]
