PATEA, Thia Day. * The Wakatu, from Wellington, met with serious mishap on entering the river this morning. She is alongside the wharf, with her hold nearly full of water. She was signalled at nine o’clock to take the bar, on which there was 12 feet of water, a westerly breeze blowing, and a moderate sea on. She crossed safely in mid-channel, but was carried on to some detached blocks at the end of the Break water, knocking a hole in her waist on the starboard side. The engines were stopped to prevent breaking the blades of the propeller. By means of a staysail she slid off. The engine* started full speed ahead,* and she was beached on the hard next the Wharf, in Bft of water. The extent of the damage cannot be ascertained until low tide. The cargo is now discharging, and is considerably damaged ; also the mails. The vessel is insured for £4,500 in the South British. She had a large general cargo, and a number of passengers.
