THE POVERTY BAY HOSPITAL.

A meeting of the Poverty Bay Hospital Committee was convened for last evening at half-past seven o’clock at the Court House, but there were only present Messrs E. K. Brown. Chrisp, and McKay, so that it was resolved at 8 p.m. to adjourn the meeting to the 18th instant.

Shortly after it was resolved to adjourn the meeting Dr Pollen entered the room, and was informed that the meeting had been adjourned for want of a quorum. A conversation between the members of the Committee present took place. Mr E. K. Brown, the Treasurer, said that there was a deficiency of £53 16s lOd in the financial department. He stated that the accounts passed at last meeting, and still unpaid, amounted to £4l Os 9d, and tho accounts that should have been passed that evening amounted to £59 19s 7d, the salary duo to the Doctor was £33 6s Bd, and to meet the above liabilities there was a credit balance at the bank of £l4 Is 2d, and tho amounts received from the patients that day amounted to £l6 10s, so that there was a large deficiency. Mr Brown considered that people should take more interest in an institution which was of so muchjimportance and he hoped they would do so. The Hospital F6te to be held on St. Andrew’s Day, 30th November, was then discussed. This fOte has been originated for the purpose of replenishing the exchequer under the present straightened circumstances and in view of this fact it was certainly incumbent on the generously disposed portion of the community to subscribe towards such a laudable object. Subscription lists had been sent some time since to all station owners, storekeepers, and others in the country districts, asking them to interest themselves in obtaining donations for the institution. If any sums have been obtained it is desirable that they should be forwarded to the Secretary as early as possible, in order to discharge current expenses. The various churches have also been appealed to, toset aside one Sunday for the purpose of augmenting the funds of this institution. It is anticipated that the request will be acceded to, and that there will be a favorable result. The various clergymen have been asked to consult as to the most suitable day. With all these agencies at work, it is hoped that a sum will accrue to the Hospital sufficient to tide them over the financial year. The Hospital Fete held last year was most successful in every way, and we have reason to believe that the forthcoming one will be conducted in such a manner as to offer inducements to the public to turn out en masse. It is intended that the sports shall be carried out on the same basis as last year, and wifi probably take place on the Whataupoko grounds, this being the most suitable for aquatic as well as for field sports. A committee consisting of representatives of the various Friendly Societies, the Volunteers, and the Gisborne Rowing Club will issue the programme for the Annual Fete early in November. As on the last occasion the day will be wound up by an evening’s entertainment, to be given by the Gisborne Dramatic Club, at which the presentation of Srizes won during the day will be made. It oes not be for want of effort on the part of those laboring in this cause that this project will not prove one of the most successful ever inaugurated in Gisborne. Wetrust that the public will show that they fully recognise the necessity for upholding such an institution, and we were only sorry last night to see so few of the committee present, so that the business could be properly attended to and carried out.
