FEARFUL CRUELTIES AT SEA.
The following frightful incidents are said to have taken place on board the American ship Gatherer during a voyage from Antwerp to AVihningtio'n .—“ A seaman was so badly beaten’that ho was laid up for months, the eyes of another man were nearly put out, and his mouth so bauly injured that eating and speaking were
rendered very* painful. A third was I lashed to the rail and beaten and | bruised by the chief officer, who broke I his nose with a pair of brass knuckle- | dusters. A. heavy capstan bar was lashed to the back of .1. Burns, the ! mate compelling him to stride up and down the deck, and at the same time' kicking the helpless sailor as lie passed Another of the crow committed suicide. j One man went mad after being struck i by the mate on the head, and placed I in confinement ami deprived of food I sor five days. Another sailor, having been partially stripped, was fastened ! by a strap to his waist, hoisted up the i mizzen stay, and held head downwards : till black in the face. The second i mate drove another of the crew half j crazy by beating him about the head, I shoulders, and legs with knotted ropes. The tlaggellation was so severe that ; the flesh was cut from his legs in ' chinks, and his entire body was a mass . of bruises and sores. The mate ordered him aloft to bend the sails, ami the poor fellow, with, tears in bis eyes. : obeyed, but being exhausted ami weak he fed into the sea from jibe mizzen." . Tqp.chief officer has just been arrested ■ in Queenstown, whither he had cs- '■ caped from America. The captain has been arrested in San Francisco.
