The Customs revenue for the Colony collected during the half-year ended 30th September last show the following monthly totals :— April £103,363 13 3 May 1’26,596 15 6 June 110,187 19 11 July 139,165 15 0 August 137,170 14 0 September 140,092 3 8

Total £762,577 1 4 Which gives a surplus of £1’2,577 Is 4d over the Treasurer’s estimate of £750,000 for the half year. From inference drawn from the foregoing we should certainly say that any stagnatory crisis which may possibly occur arise from deliberate and intentional financial policy on the part of large institutions, and not from any scarcity of money in the Colony. Monetary speculations such as those which we are led to believe will operate shortly with a “ tightening” tendency in the colonies, arc the reverse of wise, aud far from honest. We know of only one possible result, and that will be the entering into the New Zealand financial market of large foreign liuancial concerns. Colonists can t stand a second “ calling in ” in four years ; nor is it likely that they will tamely submit to such an operation. It is the last straw that breaks the camel’s back, and the colonial camel has been heavily burdened of late. Let us trust that such a possibility as a financial crisis will be averted by judicious action on the part of our leading financial establishments without necessitating the aid of foreign capitalists to that end.
