RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.—GISBORNE.
This Day i Before M. Price, Esq., N.M.J A Nice Papa. , Samson Johnson was charged with having neglected to pay for the maintenance of hia i children Anna and Martha. The amount of I arrears is only £45 6s. ‘ Johnson said if he were given two months : grace he would pay the whole sum. Sergeant Bullen prosed that within the ! last two months he had received £52 Ils 3d. : He squandered tiie money in drink. Johnson said that the money had to be distributed amongst three. ‘ Sergeant Bullen said the defendant could ; find money for drink. i It was ordered that the money should be I obtained by levying under a distress warrant or in default, to be imprisoned for three ( months In the Napier gaol, A Charming Lady. Waldprie Claude was charged with having 1 no lawful visible means of support. The evidence tended to show she was t low ehauv.tui; Inti at pruef waiU’Ww.td that
she occasionally worked the charge had to be dismissed. She was then charged with having been drunk yesterday, and notwithstanding a plea of not guilty the the case was so clearly proven that the Magistrate after describing her as a most disreputable creature, inllicted a fine of 20s and costs, or in default 48 hours imprisonment. An Unfortunate Child. Rose Cloud, aged 5 years and 6 months, was brought before the (’ourt as a neglected child. Evidence was taken which clearly proved that the mother’s character was such that she was unfitted to take charge of a child as she was habitually drunk and a reputed prostitute. The child was ordered to the Howe-street Industrial Home, until she arrived at the age of 15 years.
