The bridge leading to the Whataupoko having been swung in order to prevent traffic, notwithstanding the unpleasantness of the weather during the day, large numbers of people, in consequence of the paragraph in the Standard last issue, visited the scene. The bridge from Peel-street now represents a huge cross. Mr Wm. Adam’s announces in this evening’s issue that he will be in attendance at the Masonic Hotel on Monday next, at 1 p m., in order to pay and receive money over the late Napier race meeting. The members of the Fire Brigade met last night, but there were very few present, owing no doubt to their having to be in attendance the previous evening at the conflagration in Derby-street. Some steps ought to be taken at once to provide sufficient shed accommodation for both the new and the old engines, as in the present shed there is not half enough room and an engine has to be kept outside. Something should be done at once, and the powers that be should look to it as soon as possible in order to give encouragement to the men.
