BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH. — (COPYRIGHT). (RENTER’S TELEGRAMS.) Received Sept. 25, 3.15 p.m. MELBOURNE, Sept. 25. A case of smallpox is reported as having appeared at Hamilton; the doctors are unanimous in their opinions as to the symptoms of the disease. The patient has been isolated, and the necessary precautionary measures been taken. The “Argus” in a leading article to-day on the subject of Sir Arthur Gordon, deprecates the lengthy absence of the Governor from a colony. Sir Arthur Gordon is now the guest of Lord Normanby. MELBOURNE, This Day. Dr. Youl, of the Medical Board, has examined the supposed smallpox patient at Hamilton. He states that the person is suffering from malignant chicken-pox. The local doctors, however, hold to their opinion that the disease is smallpox, Received Sept, 26, 1 a.ih, SYDNEY, Sept. 25. The Alfred Hospital was opened to-day by His Excellency the Governor. At a meeting held this evening the Cricket Association decided not to entertain the proposed visit of a New Zealand Eleven owing to the number of matches which have already been made for the coming season.
