Should the weather prove fine there should be a large attendance at Mr sale to be held by Messrs Graham, Pitt and Bennett, to-morrow. In addition to a valuable holding the seller is noted for possessing valuable stock. Of the six tenderers who were desirous of draining the grounds of Mr T. E. R. Battery of Artillery Volunteers will take place in Gisborne on Thursday next, and on Saturday there will be a parade of a portion of this Battery at Ormond, We understand that there is not the slightest intention on the part of the Government to dispense with the services of this very useful body of men, but instead of that we hear that the Gisborne Volunteer Artillery Company is about to be made one of the principal corps in the Colony. We would ask our readers to peruse the short and accurate description given by Mr J. S, Burrows, the purser of the s.s. Oreti, in our shipping columns. Some of the residents of our little township of Gisborne inform us that they had a magnificent view of this luminous and nebulous member of the solar system moving in an ecoeutrio and consisting of a nucleus, an envelope and u tail, about half-past 4 o’clock this morning. It is visible in the east and may be seen in this direction immediately before the rising of sun. The cattle belonging to Mr Cameron, lodged in the wharf yesterday afternoon, somehow or other managed to get out, and Mr Cameron’s men had a chase after them. Doubtless they will be brought in in time for the sailing of the Oreti to-morrow afternoon. The s.s. Oreti, Captain Hollander, is advertised to sail for Auckland to-morrow afternoon, when she will take about 12 head of cattle and a number of sheep, shipped by MrE. Cameroon. The Agricultural Society notify their programme. This is a subject to be discoursed upon “in our next.” Thelwall and Co. advertise that they have jnst received a large consignment of firstclass barley, also feed oats of the beat quality. The following gentlemen have entered for the Chess Tournament, and some closely contested games may be safely anticipated:— Messrs H, E. Kenny, Hill Fisher, Sigley, Greenwood, Judd, J. W, Matthaws, Nairn, Piesse, Butt, Ingpen, H. J. Finn, W. R. Robinson, Rev. Hill, Rev. Hudson, Dr. Leggatt.
