He only married to his second wife a few days ego. No cause has been Assigned for the deed. AUCKLAND, This Day. The steward of the Mendoxa, who was be* lieved to be drowned four months ago, and for whose body the police dragged the Har bor, turned up in town yesterday, to the Mtonishment of the people, he having been in the bush. Arrived : Advance from Rarotonga, By the Advance tidings have been received of a fire breaking out on the schooner Transit, lying at Rarotonga. The vessel was partly scuttled, and the cargo was damaged by Are or water to the value of £lOOO. The loss is covered by insurance in the N.Z. Office. The Transit is now daily expected here. WELLINGTON, Sept. 23. The Government have received the fol* lowing telegram relative to the burning of the New Zealand nulls on board the mail steamer Alaska, “All the New Zealand mails for London are safe, except a portion of the newspapers and books, but the mails for the country, including the registered letters, are partly burned.
