(PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION). WELLINGTON, Sept. 19. At the inquest on the body of Gertrude Windsor, a verdict was returned to the effect that death resulted from being run over. The lad, William Barnacle, who was driving the horse and cart which caused the accident, was brought up at the Resident Magistrate’s Court on a charge of manslaughter, and remanded until the 26th, bail being allowed. The steamer Wakatu is still ashore at Patea. Her cargo is being landed, and it is expected that there will not be any trouble in floating her off when lightened. AUCKLAND, This Day. Another fire has occurred at Ponsonby. An unoccupied house belonging to Jaboz Thomas was burnt down last night, through his accidentally capsizing a kerosene lamp while engaged in effecting repairs. The building was insured in the South British for £l5O. The adjoining house was also injured. It belonged to Thomas, and was insured in the same Company for £lOO. Fanthom, proprietor of the Cambridge Course Grounds, intends prosecuting parties, numbering 40, who trespassed on his property when following the Pakurangi Hounds. A large block of buildings, recently erected in the Khyber Pass road, the property of Mr P. Pierce, manager of the New Zealand Insurance Company, were totally destroyed by fire at three o’clock this morning. The block comprised five shops, three of which were occupied by Mr Reid, cabinet-maker, Mr Boyle, fruiterer, and Mr Barnes, general dealer. The fire originated in Reid’s, who is, at present, absent in Waikato. The insurances are—The buildings, £1,700, New Zealand, re-insured, £3OO, in the National; on Reid’s stock, £lOO in the National; Barnes and Boyles’ stock £lOO each, in Standard. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. A young man named Winter, son of Madame Winter, the well-known musician, is missing. He left town on a walking trip to Akaroa on Thursday, and has not been heard of since, though parties have b*en out seal ching for him. It is said there was a snowstorm on the hill, and it is feared he was caught in it and came to grief. Some fifteen mouths ago the notorious Butler assaulted a fellow-prisoner by striking him on the head with a wooden stool. The ill-used man seems to have been biding bis time, for this morning he struck Butler twice on the head with a stone in his bread bag, knocking him down. He was secured, and handed over to the Visiting Justices to be dealt with. About noon yesterday a stable belonging to Jas. Kennelly, in the Avon District, about two miles from town, was totally destroyed by fire. A mowing machine and a quantity of chaff, the property of the tenant, James Harrison, were also burnt. The latter, who is uninsured, estimates his loss at £2OO. The stable was valued at £2O. DUNEDIN, This day. Another license to prospect for minerals on the West Coast has been granted for 1,500 acres at Martin’s Bay by the Land Board yesterday. The Board also granted a lease of 350 acres to the Caswell Sound Marble Quarrying Company, who intend sending Home for skilled workmen, and also intend erecting machinery, at a cost of £2,300, to carry on operations. NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day. An inquest was held on the body of Robert Powell, who hung himself on Tuesday. The evidence showed that at 4.30 in the afternoon, the deceased went out of the •tore to where other goods were kept, and appeared to be in his usual spirits. Mrs Powell went out 15 minutes later, and found her husband hanging from the roof by a rope. She cut him down, and obtained assistance, but it was of no avail, as the body, although warm, was quite dead. No cause can be assigned. The jury returned a verdict of felo de se.
