SOUTHERN CROSS PETROLEUM COMPANY.

Private information has been received that the shaft sinking at the Southern Cross Petroleum Works was to have been resumed on Monday last, the previous depth had been reached and the rising of the bottom had actually brought up with it one of the iron tubes that must have been detached from the lower part of the column. The new dray had been safely landed. The heavy curbs would have reached the ground so that no more trouble is anticipated by buckling, as in future tbey will be set perfectly horizontal. The odour of Petroleum permeates the atmosphere anywhere near the shaft.
