O’Connor, the champion mile runner, is to be presented by his admirers with a gold stop watch, on account of his victory over Burk on Saturday afternoon last, The strongest hints have been thrown out that Burk's supporters understood that O’Conuor was to lose the race, but that by his winning his friends were able to make large sums from Burk’s deluded backers. No satisfactory reply has been made to these declarations, although both runners deny the truth. It is understood that the Caledonian Society have decided that if either of the men enter for their annual games they will call upon them for an explanation, with a view to disqualifying if such explanation is not satisfactory. O’Connor now offers to give Burk 15 yards start in a mile.

The celebrated steeplechase horse “Sussex” is not by “ Prince” as has been alleged but is by “Grandmaster,” the sire of “Sting,” and carries in his veins the best racing strain of blood in the stud-book. “ Sting” is the property of Mr Rouse, and is not a gelding as exchanges have led us to believe. L. E. Myers, the American who last year showed such wonderful form in the half-mile at Stamford Bridge, and the quarter-mils at Birmingham, has recently given fresh evidence of liia prowess by running 600 yards in tho marvellous time of linin II 2-uth secs. The previous best known performance at the distance was that of Siah Albison, a professional, whose record was Imin 13|sec ; so the American’s time is more than 2 seconds (a matter of 17 yards) better than anything that has been done previously, At the Blankney sale of yearlings Mr Chaplin sold 13 youngsters, mostly by Hermit, at most wonderful prices, Sir J, Willoughby gave 3000 guineas for a ohesnut filly by Hermit out of Adelaide. Sir G. Chetwyiid gave 2000 guineas for a colt by Hermit out of Sister to Adelaide. A ohesnut colt by Hermit from a Musket mare fetched 800 guineas) while Lord Zetland and other sporting breeders were purchasers at prices averaging 1,060 guineas. The whole realised 13,800 guineas; although one youngster was knocked down for 20 guineas. Mr Chaplin has not been unfortunate in his breeding selections, and old Hermit seems to bring him as good fortune in his old age as he did in days of yore.
