The Government have telegraphed for information respecting the burning of the mails on board the Alaska, and it is expected that a reply will be received to-morrow. The Hon. Oliver left for the South this afternoon. The Hous. Bryce and Dick leave on a Northern tour to-morrow. The Chairman of the Wellington Harbor Board has received an answer to a letter sent to the Colonial Sugar Refining Company, Sydney, offering the latter inducements to start their works here. The Company state that they have purchased a site for Works in Auckland, and hence it is impossible for them to come to Wellington. They add that they were ] ed to the selecvon of the northern city by many considerations, but mainly the facilities offered by an ample supply of fresh water, and cheapness of co .Is. A meeting of the ladies of Auckland took place at the Young Men’s Christian Association Rooms in reference to bringing into operation in Auckland the Contagious Diseases Prevention Act. A petition was adopted against its working, and the clergy are to be appealed to to get their congregations to sign the petition. manufacturing plants for tho Waikato Company, each capable of turning out one ton of cheese per day. Two four-roomed cottages at Ponsonby were burnt to-day. A a largely attended meeting held yester day, it was resolved to inaugurate a Frozen Meat Company, and a strong Provisional Directory was formed. It is proposed to make the capital £45,000, and to ouy up the existing extensive Tinning and Soup-making Works of Messrs Nelson Bros, and Williams, which are the most complete in the Colony. At the criminal session of the District Couri only two cases were for trial. Dennis Heffernan was found Not Guilty of obtaining an insurance policy by fraud from the New Zealand Company. Win Meegun was fined 20s for making a fake declaration under the Registration of Births, etc., Act, by stating that one Elizabeth Johnston was his wife, whereas she was not.
At 2.30 this morning a fire broke out on the premises of Park and Anderson, drapers, and quickly spread to the adjoining shop of Jas. Strachan, clothier. The Brigade turned out promptly, but befors they could get to work the fire had communicated to Taylor and Towres stores, all three buildings and their heavy stocks were totally destroyedThe old Bank Hotel adjoining was saved, and the fire extended to the back of the “ Times ” office. The shops on the north side were saved by a large party and a brickwall. The insurance on the buildings of Parker and Anderson and Strachan, owned by Capt. Sutter :—South British, £500; Imperial, £5OO ; Victoria, £5OO ; Colonial, £5OO. On Taylor and Bowie’s store, also owned by Captain Sutter, Royal, £250; Victoria, £250 ; Colonial, £350. On stock, Park and Anderson : Louden and Globe, 500; Standard, £503 ; Sun, £5OO ; Nati nal, £5OO ; New Zealand, £5OO ; Union, £5OO ; South Bi’tish, £5OO. They estimate their loss at £2OOO over insurance. On Taylor and Bowie’s stock :In Natio .' r l, £5OO ; Liver pool and Globe, £500; Royal, £750 ; Victoria, £750; total £2500. They estimate their loss at £lOOO over that amount. Strachan, on stock : National, £750 ; London and Lancashire, £750; Estimates loss at £5OO.
