THE AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS.

The record of the present much travelled team of Australian cricketers must certainly be looked upon as a very brilliant one. Out of 28 games played they have only been defeated three times, by Cambridge University, Players of England, and the United South of England, The match against the Players was not looked upon as a fair criterion of the play of either side, but why it should not be so is very questionable. Spofforth throughout the trip until of late has shown that he was not fit to be in the team. He declared himself in Sydney that he was totally out of form for bowling, but Murdoch knew that if ever the Australia ib required to fight an uphill game, the phenominal bowling of the “ demon ” would help the team materially. This has evidently been the cce as s c i b v r the last match with the Players w e the team were deprived of that tower of bowb'ag strength, Palmer, Spofforth stepped in and proved that he is still par excellence the bowler of the Australians, and showing that the mighty is not faUen so low, but that when they are really wanted they can come up to the bowling crease in the same grand old form. —Rangiora Standard.
