ELOPING WITH HIS MOTHER-IN-LAW.

A man has eloped with his mother-in-law, and his wife appeared at one of the London police-courts to ask for advice. She is described as being oniy nineteen years of age, and was married a short time ago, living happily with her husband until her mother, a widow, came to live with them. Then a change ensued, the wife being treated with coolness, and the manner of the husband becoming “ warm and affectionate to his mother-in-law. At first the applicant said she did not like to saj r anything to her mother, but at length made up her mind to do so. Before she could carry out this intention, however, the pair eloped. Then the secret came out —the mother had money, the daughter had none ; and the wife believed that was the bait which had lured her husband away. Of course the magistrate could do no more than tell the deserted one to go to the parish if she wished to compel her husband to maintain her; but she bravely said “ I would rather starve.” Her present position is a bitter one ; but at the worst a brighter future may be anticipated for her than for the unnatural pair who have fled.
