(PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND. This Day. The City Council authorities are in communication with Wellington as to the best method of working the Contagious Diseases Act. The former have suggested that a ward at the Hospital should be set apart as a Lock Hospital, and that a Hospital surgeon should be appointed a visiting surgeon of that institution. No reply has yet been received. The inquest was resumed yesterday respecting Mrs Sarah Cleaver who died under suspicious circumstances.

Dr. Richardson who had medically attended the girl during her fatal illness was examined. His evidence, with the crossexamination, lasting all day. He deposed that the girl in reply to his question stated that she was well when she left Waikato, and well when she got to Auckland. She denied having taken poison and seemed surprised at such a question. He prescribed medicines to counteract corrosive poisoning and examined her mouth and fingers for stains of any corrosive, but found none, He described with great minuteness her symptoms during her illness and treatment.

Superintendent Thomson at this stage said : Before witness proceeded to state the result of the post mortem examination, he wished to mention some important information which had lately come into his possession, and which, if Dr. Richardson had known, might have led greatly to modify his diagnosis of the case. It had transpired that at tlie time the unfortunate girl was confined the after-birth was not removed until some two or three hours afterwards ; and that in the meantime she went outside the house without shoes or stockings on to burv the child, and this, too, on a cold winter night, Dr. Richardson replied that he had ascertained all this from the girl herself, and therefore it was not new to him ; he did not think these facts satisfactorily explained the girl's illness.

In continuation, the evidence showed that the cause of death was attributable to an irritant poison in the stomach, and symptoms, under microscopical scrutiny, reveal arsenical poison.

The consensus of medical opinion was that death occurred from inflammation or peritonitis of the bowels, resulting from exposure. The inquest stands adjourned until to-day, At the inquest on Mrs Cleaver to-day, Dr. Purchase who attended deceased for four days prior to her death, stated that he believed her ailment to be English cholera leading to gastro ententes.
