[Keuteb’s Special.] LONDON. September 8. Intelligence is to hand that the difficulty which has existed for some time past between Japan and Corea has now been arranged. Under the terms of the settlement the latter kingdom will pay the indemnity which waa demanded by the Japanese Government. The Cricket Match at Scarborough between the Australian Team and Eleven of I Zingari was continued to-day. The Home Team, with one wicket down, resumed their first innings, which closed for a total of 279. The Australians then commenced their 2nd innings (153 in their first), and at the conclusion of the day’s play had scored 30 for the loss of one wicket.
The majority of Irish Police Constables, who were dismissed for being the promoters of the recent agitation, are now being reinstated by Far! Spencer, the Lord Lieutenant, and have returned to their dutv.
The cricket match at Scarborough Australians v. I Zingari, was concluded to-day in a draw, want of time preventing its completion. The Australians were at the wicket for their second innings the whole day, and when the stumps were drawn had scored 423 for six wickets.
Consols remain at par. New Zealand Securities, 5 per cent. 10’40, loan 105 A ex div. ; 5 per cent. (1889), loen 106| ; per cent. (1879-1904) 101$ ex div. Colonial breadstuff’s and tallow, unchanged. The total quantiry of wheat afloat for Great Britain is 2,090,000 quarters. At to-day’s wool sales 10,100 bales were catalogued, and there was a good demand for the various lots offered.
September 9. A despatch has been received to-day from Sir Garnet Wolseley, timed noon, regarding the engagement fought this morning near Rassassin. Sir Garnet reports that the enemy in great force were observed reconnoitering the British outposts at daybreak. The order was at once given for them to be attacked, and after a somewhat brief engagement they were repulsed M ith a very heavy loss, and four guns wei-e captured. The loss on our side was slight. Aftex* their defeat the enemy retired to the lines at Telelkebir, their artillery meanwhile firing at long range upon the British forces. The latter have since returned to Rassassin where the head quarters of the army now are. Consols declined |to 99g. There are no changes to report in New Zealand securities or Colonial produce. A fair demand was experienced at to-day’s wool auction ; 8,500 were offered. ALEXANDRIA. The latest news from headquarters is to the effect that a concentration of the troops under Sir Garnet Wolseley, is to be completed at Rassassin by Monday next, and that an advance in force against the enemy will then be made.
An Arab mob to-day attacked and overpowered the guard, and forcibly removed from the gallows, the bodies of tho murderers of Messrs Dobson and Richardson, who were publicly hanged here yesterday. September 9. At an early hour this morning Arabi menaced the British position at Rassassim with a strong force, and opened fire with hie field-pieces upon the entrenchments, and a heavy cannonading was maintained on both sides for some time. At nine o’clock the British were advancing, and the enemy falling back. Later. Subsequently the enemy made an attack upon both flanks of the British position at Rassassim simultaneously, and sharp fighting took place. At noon the enemy suffered a severe repulse ; the fighting was, however, continued. The main body of troops, under Sir Garnet Wolseley, is now at Mahuta, and is rapidly pushing to the front. An attempt was made last night by a party of Arabs to suprise and obtain possession of the city. Nothing, however, came of tho affair.
