(per united press association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. During the passage of the barque Norman McLeod from London to Wellington, a seaman named R. Newton while aloft, missed his hold and fell on the quarter deck, being badly crushed. On the following day he succumbed to his injuries. He was a young man aged 21. At the inquest on Thomas Hewson who was drowned at Oterongo Bay, a verdict of death by accidently drowing was returned. Spills' sawmill near Datefield Railway Station, was burnt down early this morning • nothing was saved. The engine and machinery is much damaged. The mill has only just been started working. The origin of the fire is at present unknown. Vital statistics for August: Births, 111; deaths, 37 ; marriages, 22, At a meeting of the Coi|ncil of thp New Zealand Rifle Association last night it was decided to hold the next prize competition at Dunedin, commencing on Friday, Nov, 3rd, The programme was decided upon, and Includes four matches for each Champion Belt. The twenty highest aggregate scorers fire a fifth match to decide the Champion prizes, which vary from £lOO to £l2O per match, I and the five aggregate prizes for each class, j £lO2 10s and £5O, with the Belt. The Team I Matches are the same as in previous years - i five prizes, varying from £4O to £.7, The I Otago Ladies' Shield Match is included in the programme.
