[Reuter’s Telegrams.] SYDNEY. August 22. The New South Wales Parliament was opened to-day by the Governor, Lord Augustus Loftus. His Excellency’s speech on the occasion stated that special business necessitated the meeting of Parliament at the present time. He announced that measures would be introduced during the session dealing with the following questions:—Local Government Land Laws, Consolidation and Conversion of Public Securities, Criminal Law, Mining, Forests, Titles to Property, and Adulteration of Food. His Excellency congratulated the Colony on the satisfactory state of its revenue, success of the Licensing Act, and progress of railway extension. The speech further alluded to the question of water conservation throughout the Colony, to works proceeding for metropolitan water supply, and measures adopted for improvement of the city of Sydney. A meeting of the Opposition members was held this evening, at which the policy of the Government as foreshadowed in the Governor’s speech was discussed. It is thought probable that Alexander Stuart will be elected leader of the Opposition, and that the party is consolidating. MELBOURNE. August 21. A Conference of the two Houses of Parliament on the Licensees Qualifying Bill met today, but has now broken up, and the Assembly has the measure again under discussion. August 22. The wound inflicted by O’Farrell upon Archbishop Gould is very slight. O’Farrell was brought up at the Police Court this afternoon and remanded to Friday next.
