Passengers:—Messrs A. W. Rees, A. J. Barnard, Giygn, and Hailon. DEPARTURES. AUGUST. 23th.—Rotomahana, s.s., for Auckland. Pasgers :—Messrs W. L. Rees, W. Fitztoon; Shollum, Folhoef, S. C. Alexander. The schooner Gisborne left Auckland on Saturday, 12th August, is now hourly expected. She took the following cargo from Auckland for this port:— 9ooo feet timber, 8300 slates, 2500 palings, 14,000 feet mouldings, 2000 tiles, 100 nests pipes, 60 cases kerosene, and a large quantity of sundries. The s.s. Oreti arrived in Napier last night at 8 o’clock, and leaves this afternoon, she may be expected here early to-morrow morning, whence she will proceed north. The schooner Atalanta sailed this morning for Manikau in ballast. The schooner Waiwera, which had to take shelter under Young Nick’s Head on Saturdiy last, returned to her anchorage this morning, where she awaits to be lightered. The Mahinapua left Auckland at 6.15 p.m, o i Saturday last, aud arrived here at 9 o’clock t lis morning. She will not leave till early tomorrow morning, as she will wait to take the footballers on to Napier. The steamer City of Lincoln, for New York from Swansea, on the 18th May, in latitude 41, longitude 48, passed 27 icebergs, the last rising 1000 feet above the water, with many polar bears upon it. The steamer carefully picked its way among the icebergs for eight hours.

In view of the possible complete stoppage of the Channel Tunnel operations, a revival is contemplated of the large Channel feny scheme promoted by Messrs Fowler and Abernethy. The project is to construct large ferry steamers for service between England Bid France, and on these the trains, passCh* luggage, &c,, are to be transferred The ship Lord Downshire, said to lie the largest sailing ship ever constructed, Jett Belfast 30th May, in tow of two powerful • ieam tugs.
