FOOTBALL MATCH.
Gisborne v. Napier. Contrary to general expectation the weather proved to be most enjoyable and the ground being in first-rate condition, everything necessary to give Mat to the match rendered it a most attractive one. Shortly after two o’clock swarms of people might have been seen wending their way across the Whautaupoko Bridge, having for their object the witnessing of a most exciting contest between the local and visiting teams. Mr Bailey, the enterprising purchaser of the gate privilege, could certainly have had no cause of complaint as he and his assistants were kept hard at work receiving money from some 600 or 700 people who crossed in order to witness the game. The Gisborne team were decidedly the favorites, the Napier team being somewhat light. Activity is, however, the main thing, and the visitors had a number of admirers, The result of the game it given below, hut a more detailed report will appear in to-morrow's issue i—
(First Twbnty-Fxvk Minutrs.) Gisborne kicked off; end of time no score, but Napier has had by far the best of it, having forced the ball down twioe behind the Gisborne goal Hue, The passing back and running of the Napier men is much ad> mired,
(Second Twenty-Five Minutes,) In the beginning Napier got a touoh-down by a very close run by J. Begg, but the kick for goal proved a failure. Gisborne then managed, after a desperate struggle, to touch the ball down behind opponents goal-line, the kick- off, however, l>v Berry proved a failure. The score therefore stands equal, both sides having scored a touch-down. (Third Twenty-Five Minutes.) | At the conclusion of the third twenty-five minutes no change had taken place in the score, though Gisborne were playing much bettor, Mills playing like a fiend.
[As the game was not concluded when we went to press, we hold over a full ropoAS until to-morrow.] |
