SPORTING.
By the s.s. Rotomahana yesterday morning, there arrived a mouse colored gelding named “ Il Travatore,” to the order of Mr M. H. Smith. This horse, who is by “ Day Dawn ” has been highly spoken of by the Wanganui papers, and is said to have performed excellently over fences. Notwithstanding a vory rough passage, the animal looks well, and walked about to-day as if the trip had not in the least injured him. He is neatly, although somewhat lightlyshaped, scarcely but gives one the idea of being a cross country horse. However (< handsome is as handsome does ” and we only hope to see Mr Smith’s colors, on the mouse colored one, looming in the front during some of the coming meetings,
Foul Play, Squire, Hatred Colt and Morning Star will be shipped at 5 o'clock this afternoon by the s.s. Mahinapoa for Napier, in charge of Mr William Proffitt. All the horses look to be in good fettle and we hope will show their noses in front at the finish of the races they are engaged in. (Fbom Exchanges.) The Auckland Racing Club with hold a Spring Meeting thia year, Maid of Honour's filly foal, by the wellknown horse Musket, is dead, The Auckland Stud Company's horse Cap-a-pie will stand in Wanganui diatviut this season, Louie, Mei'lln, Amazon, and Hippodamia are said to be the best of the lot in the Napier Spring Handicap. Betting on the C.J.C. Handicap is at a standstill and is likely to romafn so until the weeding out takes place. “Ariel" says that Morning Star, in his old form is a good thing for the Napier Hurdles, with Kist 101 b up. None of the Robinson stable will leave the Colony after all, as the whole team have been scratched for the Great Metropolitan Stakes.
Mr G. G. Stead, of Christchurch, lias decided to give up breeding and racing, and will offer tlic whole of his stock by auction after the Canterbury meeting, Cunnamulla has been hacked to win about £SQO in the Melbourne Cup. He is a 4-year-old, by Maribynioug, out of Jessamine, and has Bgt 21b to carry in the Cup. His principal performance was winning the Sydney Cup (2 miles,) with Ost up, beating Sweet Wulituii (Ost 101 b,) and a large field.
