Gisborne Library Dramatic Club.
! A meeting was held in the Library rooms last evening for the purpose of forming a Dramatic Club in connection with the Library. Mr Featon in the Chair. The Chairman read the advertisement convening the meeting, and said the object in view was not alone to draw out the historic ability of the youth of Gisborne, but also to make the Club a means by which elocution and confidence would be obtained. Then again it would afford encouragement to young authors to write dramas, burlesques, or farces. He thought by the formation of such a club very many pleasant evenings might be passed ami a Heal of instruction acquired.
Mr J. Bourke was of opinion that the Club would be highly popular and he felt convinced would be successful. At every entertainment got up it was observable that the dramatic portion of it took well, and there could be no doubt that plays by local authors would very much increase the attraction. Mr O’Ryan then proposed that the Club be called the Gisborne Library Dramatic Club, and that the object shall be the production of entertainments in aid of local charities and institutions. In a conversational manner the rules to be adopted were discussed and it was decided that at the next meeting a manager and a Committee of four (one of whom to act as Secretary and Treasurer) be elected at a general meeting to be held during the first week of September. The working of the Club, casting of parts, selection and arrangement of programme, should be left entirely to the manager. It was arranged that the subscription be two shillings and sixpence a year payable in advance, and that the eligibility of members be left to the Committee. The first dramatic season to commence in September and end in March, during which time a series of entertainments will be given. It was agreed the Committee should meet not later than one week after each performance in order to receive a balance-sheet and pay all debts which may have been incurred. Messrs Featon, Bourke, O’Ryan, and P. O’Meara, were formed a provisional committee. A number of names of our leading amateurs were mentioned and it was decided to endeavor to induce them to become members.
