The following is compiled from the “ Leader ” and from Haydn The Breakwater at Alexandria, which was commenced in May 1871, and finished in December 1873, by the English firm of Greenfield and Co., commences near the west end of the island of Pharos, and extends to the southward towards Meks, forming an obtuse angle, and is nearly two miles in length. This huge barrier is formed of a foundation of 26,000 solid masses of masonry, each 20 tons in weight, faced on the side next the sea, with natural blocks, each 15 to 25 cwt. in weight. The horizontal surface is 19 feet in width, and at low tide is 10 feet above the level of the water. The admirably sheltered harlxir thus obtained is nearly 1800 acres in area, and from 20 to (iO feet in depth. The inner harbor is about 475 acres in area, with an average depth of 27 feet. The whole berthage thus obtained is close upon two miles. Alexandria, the ancient seat of the Greek Sovereigns of Egypt, the Ptolemies, was founded l>y Alexander the Great in 332 8.C., and who died and was buried here 10 years later, viz., 322 B.C. In B.C. 298 Ptolemy Soter began to erect the Museum, the Serapeum, the Pharo, and other edifices, including the famous Library, which made Alexandria famous, and which were afterwards finished by his son and grandson. B.C. 48 Julius Ciesar took Alexandria, when the Library was again destroyed, only to be replaced B.C. 30 by one brought from Pergamus by Antony ; in A.D. 122, the city was restored by Adrian, and a long period of peace followed; iu the year A. D. 297, Alexandria was besieged by and fell into the hands of Diocletian. A.D. 321, Alexandria again fell into a disturbed state by the feud existing between the Athanasians and Arians, which ended A.D. 363, by George of Cappadocia being killed and Athanasius finally restored. In the year 305 Alexandria M’as visited by a terrible earth, quake, in which 50,000 persons are said to have perished. The library was again destroyed by Theodosios in 390. In 616 Alexandria was again captured, this time by Chosroes 2nd of Persia and (again in 640 by Amrou, the General of the Caliph Omar, who caused tho third library to lie burned, there, by supplying the public baths with fuel fcr | six months. In 969, Cairo was founded, which tended greatly to the decay of Alexandria as a city. In 1355, The Crusaders plundered Alexandria, and 1798 it was taken by the French, In 1801, Sir Ralph Abcrcromby fought, and defeated the French at Alexandria, and In 1807, it was again oap< tured by the British under Fraser, Taken for all in all Alexandrian life is not a happy one. The late bombardment by the British Fleet has been comparatively innocent iu the matter of damage and destruction in comparison to what Alexandria has undergone at other hands, Can it be that she is getting used to it 1

Edwin James, once a celebrated Q.C., and who was debarred in 1862 for accepting bribes in a case he was prosecuting, has died miserably. He was once member for Marylebone in the House of Commons, and appears as Mr Stryver in Dickens’ “Tale of Two Cities. ”

A daring burglary has been perpetrated in North Adelaide. The Tramway Company’s Offices were broken into, and a large iron fire-proof safe, con', ining £126 in cash and 1000 tramway tickets carted bodily away. No oluo has as yet been obtained to tho thieves or their booty.

Harry Lemon a son of the late Mark Lemon, the celebrated Editor of “ Punch," died in a cab in Melbourne on the 18th ult., while being conveyed to the Hospital for treatment of a pulmonary disease. He was a contributor to several leading Australian papers.

The Cape Colony and New Zealand are the only British Possessions in which the franchise is extended to the colored population. In the Cape, however, there is no colored representation.
