On tho fourth page of this evening's Issue will be found an interesting extract from the “ Referee ” entitled :— “ The Channel Tunnel, and what it may Lead to," Mr Griffin, United States Consul in Auckland, left by the mail steamer for San Francisco on Tuesday last. A banquet presiiled over by the Mayor was got up for him on Friday last and was a success. Mr Griffin is a favorite in Auckland. He has been » largo and valuable contributor to N.Z, literature.
It is said that Mrs Laugtry, the celebrated boauty, will make a professional tour of th* Colonies early next year. Some documents produced at the last meet, Ing of the Tlmaru Borough Council show that pound-keeping is not altogether a profitable business. One impounded horse, having * broken fetlock, could not be sola, and had to be shot after running up expenses to th* tune of £2 Is. Two others died of “old age " in the pound, the costs of the two amounting to R 4 3s. " One billy goat ’’ ran up a bill of £1 13s, and was sold for a shilling. Another horse was sold for 13*. his bill being £2 Us, and aloes was sustained on another one. W’hree animals were sold at a price that left some surplus, but th* who!* of the transactions showed a loss of £7 6s 9d.
Canon Murphy, F.P., of St. Kevins, Dublin, was denouncing tho Plkoulx Park murders at a recent eight o'clock morning mass, and calling on the congregation to aid in delivering the murderers upto justice, when ho suddenly fell down on his back. It was thought at first that he had fainted, but h* died on the altar steps. While ho was dying the congregation recited tho prayers for th* dead.
