The punishment is said to have been very severe. The Tui’s shaft was broken : it is being replaced by a new one. The weather has again set in wet. Magill, draper of the Arrow, was charged with having set fire to his shop on the 31st July. The Crown Prosecutor, in his opening address, said one important question was how the fire could have originated within the place, the prisoner being the only person there for some hours previous, without his having some hand in it. It would be shown that the stock on the premises hud been valued at £1892, and that it was insured for £2060, and that at the time the tire occurred the prisoner was expecting further goods to the value of £2OOO. On the night preceding the fire, the books, which bad always been kept on the premises, had been taken away by a Mr Summerfield with prisoner's knowledge. The prisoner was further remanded until Tuesday next. NAPIER. CHRISTCHURCH. The estimate of the cost of plant for the lighting of Lyttelton by Electric light, is £15,000, and for maintenance per year, £437 10s. The cost of lighting it at present is £3OO a year for gas and kerosene.
No small amount of sensation has been caused in touni by the sudden departure of Mr Alfred Thompson, solicitor, by the San Francisco mail boat. It was only discovered yesterday morning. An attempt to intercept him by telegraph was useless. INA’ERCARGILL. The first accident involving personal injury on our tramway, occurred yesterday. Christina Hansen, a servant at the Gladstone Hotel, made an attempt to jump on a moving car. She fell, and the carr passed over her leg, causing such serious injuries that it is feared amputation will have to be resorted to. NELSON. An inquest was held on the body of Wilson, who was found dead in his cell .at the Gaol yesterday. The evidence showed that the utmost attention and kindness had been shown to the deceased, who was left alone at his own request; and although the doctor, who saw’ the man only on Sunday morning, had diagnosed the case correctly, there appeared no probability of a fatal termination, A post mortem examination showed that death had resulted from congestion of the lungs, but the liver of deceased, as also his stomach and intestines, were congested. A verdict was given accordingly. TIMARU. Owing to suspicious circumstances surrounding the recent fire at the premises of Thomas Lyels, watchmaker, the police have determined to hold an inquiry into it on Thursday next.
