AN INCIDENT AT PRINCE LEOPOLD'S MARRIAGE.
A special correspondent of one of the London daily papers being desirous of. “ doing ” the Stqte Banquet At Wiftd» sor for the journal ho represented, pre. vailed upon A castle official to smuggle him into the banquotlug.hall, so that he might have a good view of every, thing which was going on, hear all that was said, and not be seen himself, as no Press invitations were issued on sqoh an occasion. This gentleman managed to get up into the opgan.loft just behind the Royal Arma, Chd ha peeped down on all below occasionally tram between the lion’s two fore-feet. This suited him admirably, and he went on scribbling leaf after leaf, with his hat on his knees, using the crown of it for his desk. By some sadden move, ment, however, he dropped his silver pencil-case, which wont straight down on to the table where the guests were enjoying themselves, and fell plump into a tureen of soup, close to the elbow of the Duke of Edinburgh, with a loud splash. There was some little commotion at the time, but no further notice was taken of the matter and the soup was in due course soon afterwards removed. Whether the servants ever discovered the silver penoil-case in the tureen is net on record; but the fact may be stated, that the journal which this special correspondent represented was the only one of the London dailies which gave a full account of the State Banquet on that eventful occasion, and everybody wondered how they got their report, for it was not stated at the time that the notes were taken aurrepti. tiously from a perch ;n (he organ-left,
