CORRESPONDENCE.
do not hold ourselves responsible for opinions expressed by our TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —We find toll-gates are done away in all civilised parts of the country, where evidently they have not met with general favor. Surely after the proof we have had we do not intend to abuse the industry of our district, which will be the case if tolls are erected. I am of opinion it is not the wish of the people. The poll that was taken some time back to test the feeling of the ratepayers was, in my opinion, very unfair. Not many men can afford to lose a day to record their votes as the poll closed in working hours. I could not say if it was planned that the poll should close at four o’clock, thinking only those that would be benefltted most could spare the time to record their votes. On a question like this one parson should only have one vote ; those that have three, four, and fire would reap the benefit of monies unjustly extracted from the pockets of the men of tail. In my opinion it is a lame excuse to try ta make Natives pay ; perhaps the greater portion of them have been sufficiently persecuted already. Lands enhanced in value by roads should be rated, and those lands only should support our roads. Instead of erecting tolls, monies should be sot apart to procure disinterested and experienced persons outside our district to value our lands, then that portion of the community that is sought to be abused would instead be benefltted j it would put the burdens on the backs of those that should bear them. In my opinion a two and a-half per cent, rate would produce more than fire does now. It is evident we all must live and aid should be given to the weak.—l am, Ac., Anti-Toll.
