Poverty Bay Standard. PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 9, 1882.

The case of Robert Cooper’s estate was the subject of very little discussion at the meeting of Creditors in the R.M.’s Court this afternoon. So far as we can see the proceedings are null and void. There was no adjournment made of yesterday’s meeting, for there was no Registrar, or any one else who had legal authority to act for him. present. Mr Greenwood’s unavoidable absence in Wellington, and the insufficiency of Mr Gruner’s appointment as his deputy, invalidated any proceedings which have been taken up to the present time. A coach and four can be driven right through the whole proceedings, although the manipulation of them by Mr Whitaker was a master stroke. The way he rushed the thing through was a caution to mariners. Of course the Supreme Court will have a say in the matter, which will very probably capsize the apple cart at present driven by Messrs Coleman and Clarke. If the Supreme Court will not interfere, it is the intention of the creditors to see to the matter themselves. Usury can’t be allowed, nor is it fair that any one party such as Read’s Trustees, should claim the lion’s share of any estate. The mortgage deeds of those securities will stand overhauling. We have seen one which won’t hold water, and doubtless others are in the same condition. The large body of creditors want to have a look at those mortgage titles.
