Poverty Bay Standard. PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING. FRIDAY, AUGUST 4, 1882.

Mr Oxenham delivered 200 yards of gravel, the first of his contract on the Borough Council account, near Reads Gate, yesterday. Mr n. E. Webb, late proprietor of the Standard baa been requested tu acr. ns agent in Melbourne’ fur th? houthein Ci’Oab Pt-liw-leuiu Company.

The fireproof safes for the Government building offices arc being rapidly advanced toward completion. The walls are somewhere about two and and a half feet thick, leaving ample room inside. To all appearance the structure is likely to answer the purpose for which it is required. Mr Fred. Nelson, the celebrated blondinist, has informed us that the rope across the mouth of the Big River has been repaired, and that he feels confident he will to-morrow perform the longest rope walking feat on record. He is of opinion that it will be advisable to essay the task at slack water, and we sincerely hope’the plucky professional may accomplish it successfully. Unfortunately the weather at present promises badly for the success we would like to see achieved, but we trust it will clear up, and that there will be a large concourse of spectators to witness Mr Nelson’s performance. Mr A. Weston has heard rumors derogatory to the character of the milk supplied by him and he challenges proof of such assertions, offering to donate £5O to any charitable institution if they be proved. We {were shown this morning a splendid set of buggy harness, weighing in all less than fourteen pounds. The article is made to the order of Air Brassey, and for taste of design, and skiful workmanship, surpasses all Mr M. Halls previous efforts. We congratulate Mr Hall upon the success he has achieved. A glance at our report of the tenders opened at the Cook County Council last night will show that they were not, as usnal, widely different, and we are informed that those accepted, differed in every instance, only a few shillings from the Engineer’s estimate. It was the day before the soiree and the last thing our sleepy reporter remembers, was standing before the Rev. Mr Me , and watching two young people who were evidently bent upon hurling themselves into the troubled sea of matrimony without even so much as a life-buoy to be used in case of accident. They took the jump before our representative could get particulars with which to frame obituary notices for the youthful couple. He felt sorry for them, and so calmly sat down and slept, pondering over his own experiences. From information received we have been enabled to glean the following particulars regarding the bridegroom. He is somewhat undersized aud has at one time followed the occupation of a Churchwarden. Further than this nothing is known against his character. Of the ladywell, all we can say is we wish her every happiness.

The Evangelistic Services held every evening in the Masonic Hall by the Right Rev. the Bishop of Waiapu and Revs. Hill, Hudson and MoAra, are drawing to a close. They have been productive of good, and are impressive aud instructive. It seems far bettor to us that such services should be held regularly, than at intervals. True wo cannot always have the benefit of the delivery of all these gentlemen, but even one clergyman undertaking a regular service of this description would be an acceptable fact to a great many. The Bishop and his coadjutors deserve tjne thanks of the community. The return juvenile football match Alb comers v. Gisborne School, will take place to-morrow afternoon, if the weather clears, in Captain Tucker’s paddock. A good muster is expected, as also a good game, as both sideshave been vigorously practising. Play commences at 3 o'clock.

Mr Bailey, of the American Novelty Company, at present carrying on business in Parnell and Boylan’s Masonic Hall shops, notifies that he will only be here two day’s longer. We earnestly recommend the public to nay this enterprising gentleman a visit, ana wc feel sure they will come away highly satisfied with what they have seen, and what they have bought, for buy they will, in spite of themselves. They can’t help it! ! I The “ stickiest sticker extant ” is a cement which thoroughly deserves its name. We should like to oal{ especial attention to Kerr’s patent lamps, which are simply perfect in their simplicity and utility, so much so that we should be glad if some of the City Fathers would inspect them, with a view to further lighting up our ways, which are very dark ! There was only one case on hearing at the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning, viz., McKay v. Streeter, the plaintiff claimed £4, for a dog which he had sold to the defendant, and which amount the defendant had promised to pay within two weeks of the sale, but he had not done so. His Worship gave judgment for the plaintiff with costs. The defendant did not appear. A general meeting of the Acclimatisation Society was held this afternoon, at the Masonic Hotel, Mr S. Locke in the chair. The balance-sheet read by MrDufaur showed that the society had in hand £55 16s 7d. £3O was apportioned (for the importation of 400 trout, and it was also decided to secure 10 pair of Prairie Fowl of both sexes.
