On Monday last the schooner Elizabeth Curie, 79 tons, bound from Lyttlton to Auckland, went ashore on Coney Island, near the Great Barrier and became a wreck. No lives were lost. It appears when off the Island the wind died away, and the vessel drifted towards shore; 45 fathoms of cable was run out but the anchors did not hold, aud she went on the rocks. The crew went ashore in a boat, and after repairing it, returned to the site of the wreck, and found the vessel had entirely disappeared. They then proceeded to the Barrier and took in provisions, and arrived here after a passage of 36 hours. The vessel belonged to F. Jenkins of Lyttelton, and £4OO had been recently spent in repairs. The vessel was re-insured to £75 on the freight. It has been ascertained that the Elizabeth Curie is insured as follows : South British, £250 ; New Zealand, £575 ; National, £250 ; Union, £lOO. The new steamer for the Thames and Te Aroha trade, called the “Waitoa," was launched yesterday by]Mr Holmes at the North Shore. The Harbor Board has inspected the site for the proposed reclamation on the North Shore, for which a lease has been asked for by the Colonial Sugar Refining Company, for refining works, with a view to deciding as to the length of the lease. The reclamations are to embrace over four acres of foreshore to the company's property.

NELSON. A man named Stratford, but who gave the name of Coleman Phillips, and who had obtained a house on hire from Earll, of Blenheim, and sold the game, was subsequently arrested on a charge of horse stealing at Lyell, and was to-day committed for trial at the Supreme Court here. A young lad named Fry was riding on a load of firewood at Riwaka, yes. terday, when he fell, the dray passing over his chest, and he received injuries which proved fatal.

CHRISTCHURCH. A cablegram has been received from Sir Julius Vogel stating that he can. not leave Melbourne for a fortnight. Another lively meeting was held in a portion of the Stanmore electorate last night, at which resolutions con. demnatory of Mr Pilliet'g conduct were carried.
