A public meeting in Kingston (a portion of Stanmore Electorate) passed a resolution last night, that Mr Pilliet had forfeited the confidence of his constituents, and requesting him to resign. The Transatlantic Insurance Company has retired from business here. The company has for some time done very little business in the Colony, except in Canterbury, where it has had a fair share.

DUNEDIN. The Jockey Club Committee last night drew up a programme for their Spring and Autumn meetings. The stakes for the Spring Meeting include £1025 of added money, an increase of £5OO on previous lists, and for the Autumn Meeting £3035, an increase of about £lOOO. Neilson and Wilkin, sentenced to a months imprisonment for breach of Trade Marks Act, have to-day been released from gaol. AUCKLAND.

The erection of a railway bridge at Hamilton, on the Waikato, is causing some anxiety. One cylinder has been sunk 80ft. lOin, below the bed of the rivor, and there are no indications of hard bottom yet met with. According to the present rate of progress the bridge will not be finished for years. The charge against Asher Wren of embezzling funds of the Accident Insurance Company has been further remanded. There are other charges against the prisoner, but the evidence is not yet ready. Bishop Selwyn arrived at Russell yesterday, and had a conference with Commodore Erskine. The Bishop leaves for Norfolk Island to-morrow, in the Southern Cross, accompanied by Archdeacon Clark and Mr Wright. At the ball given by the Commodore and the officers of the Nelson, Bishop Selwyn was present. The bridge over the Waipa, at Whatiwbatihoe, is finished. When driving the first pile Tawhiao incurred a debt of £2O for drinks, which he expected Government to pay. Finch, the publican, will probably sue His Majesty for the amount. The American Consul, G.W. Griffin, goes to America on leave by the outgoing San Francisco steamer, in connection with New Zealand matters. to his relatives. Tu Tawhiao, the King's son, said to Dufaur the Kingites were principally vexed at the means adopted for Winiata’s capture.
