Concerning the throwing of oil upon troubled waters, and “ Old Salt ” writes thus to the “ Otago Daily Times —Sir : Allow me to state that many years ago, when crossing the Banks of Newfoundland in a small brig in a fearful gale, our vessel running for bare life, it was proposed by our captain to try the effect of some seal oil we hud on board. The sea was mountains high, and breaking heavily, but with our two swabs soaked in oil, one over each quarter, it was surprising to see the change. The break was gone, and our panger past so long as our oil lasted. Now, Sir, what about our bar harbor P Would it not often save our coasting vessels in case of extremity, and boats making for our shores through the heavy surf would feel the benefit of a small keg of oil hung over their stern in case of shipwreck. Some of our oldest tars would be surprised at the effect it has on the water.”
