DEBATING CLASS IN CONNECTION WITH THE GISBORNE LIBRARY.
1 Mirrnro was held last evening at the Gisorne Library Room, with u view of forming Debating Class in Gisborne. The following gentlemen wore present:-— lav. Mr Hill, Mewn- Fenton, Siglay, O’Byan, Curtain, Gold, Bullock, Brooking.
The Chairman (Rev. Mr Hill) having explained the object of the meeting, those present formed themselves into a Debating Class to be called the “ Library and Debating Class.”’ Members of the Library to be admitted free and on the recommendation of the Rev. Mr Hill, non-members to pay 2s 6d subscription.
Mr Kenny was, in his absence, elected Chairman (which position he has since accepted) ; Mr Sigley, Vice-Chairman ; Mr Gould, Hon. Secretary and Treasurer, for the ensuing quarter of this session of the Class. A few rules were adopted, the most important of which is Rule 2. “ That the objects of the Class be the improvement of its members by means of debates, essays, lectures, readings, and recitations, but debates on subjects of a sectarian character are absolutely excluded.” The Class is to meet every Tuesday evening at 7 o’clock, at the Library Room. It was resolved that next Tuesday evening the meeting should be of an initiatory character such as an address, election of new members, and drawing up a programme for the remainder of the session’ For the Tuesday following, the Rev. Mr Hill promised to take the affirmative side of the question of National Insurance; Mr Gould to lead in the negative. The new books for the Library have arrived.
