At the Victoria Racing Club’s Steeplechase meeting to-day, the Grand National Hurdle Race was won by Rhesus 1 Lothair ... ... ... 2 Allegn ... ... ... 3 Fourteen horses started. Rhesus won by a neck. For the Grand National Steeplechase nine horses started. Great Western was first past the post after a most exciting finish. Chrysalis, 2; Breechloader, 2.
Arrived: The Union Company’s Te Anau from the Blufl, this afternoon. July 23. Arrived this evening, P. & O. Company’s Ravenna with English mails via Suez and Brindisi dated London, June 16.
This Day. The Hon. F. S. Dobson, SolicitorGeneral, speaking at a dinner on Saturday night, hinted at an early dissolution of Parliament in tho event of Mr Miramspersisting in his opposition to the Land Bill now before the Assembly, 3.9 p.m. The s.s. Te Anau ■which arrived on Saturday afternoon, was delayed on the voyage by an accident to her machinery, and it is expected that it will take sometime to repair damages. Messrs McLean Bros, and Rigg, who a few days ago purchased Messrs Briscoe’s retail premises in Collinsstreet, have since resold the building to Messrs Antony Woodern and Sou, of Sydney, at a profit of £15,000. MAURITIUS, Advices of 10th inst. are to band. No vessels have cleared for Australia since the last reports, Sugarmaking is retarded owing to wet weather, and tho season's crop will, probably, be very late, It is, expected, however, that a fair supply will be available next month.
