100 to 6 is what the Auckland books are offering about King Quail for the C.J.C. “ Nemo ” says that Segonhoc is the finest colt that ever stepped on the Randwick course.
“ Augur ” thinks the Gem, with 7st 41bs, is “ pitchforked ” in the Melbourne Cup, and if allowed to run will be amongst the first three.
The Tasmanian sports expect great things from Stockwell, who is entered for the Melbourne Cup. He ran a good second for the Hobart Cup, and appropriated the Launceston Cup a week after. It is said that Martini-Henry, the MusketSylvia colt which was sold to the Hon. Mr White, for £1,250, is doing splendidly, and is entered for the Maribyrnong Plate. He shows a great turn of speed, and will not disgrace his parents. There is very little straight out betting being done in the C.J.C. Handicap in Christchurch. The only animal the least in demand is Betrayer, for whom 100 to 12 is wanted, but 100 to 20 is the best price offering. He has also been backed for a few hundreds in doubles in connection with the Derby candidates—Cheviot, Nonsense, Vanguard and Siesta.
The day before the Melbourne Cup weights were declared, a well-known backer of horses in Melbourne took £5OOO at 1000’s to 6 about the double Segenhoe and Darebin. 10,000 to 50 was also backed about Segenhoe and Hereford Bay.
