On the day of the marriage of Prince Leopold a State banquet (savs the London correspondent of the “ N. Z. Times ”) was given in the evening in St. George’s Hall, covers being laid for 100 guests. The immense room was hung with all the banners of the Knights of the Garter enrolled since the institution of the Order in 1350. The w’hole of the sevrico was in gold —valued at something over £2,000,000 —while the side-board was adorned by the gold lyre bird, studded with £30,000 worth of precious stones, and the tiger’s head foot-stool of silverguilt, with crystal tusk and gold tongue, captured from Tippo Saib in ISO!), ■nd valued at £lO,OOO. Her Majesty occupied tho centre of tho table, and the whole display was almost barbaric in its splendour. Matrimonial.—A Paris paper contains a notice from the Marquis of Anglesey that he will not be responsible for his wife's debts. Lady Anglesey is an American lady, and her marriage took place about two months ago.—A Dublin newspaper has published the following:—“ I hereby warn all persons from trusting my wife, Ellen Flanaghau, on mv account, as 1 am not married to her/’ The bowed of the pbess.—At a banquet given to Mr Archibald Forbes in Melbourne the toast of “ The Press” immediately followed that of “ The Guest of the Evening,” and took precedence of “ The Parliament of Vie. toria.” During the evening Mr P. Lalor, the Speaker of tho Legislative Assembly, said he was not surprised at the precedence given to tho Pres#, as it had “ bossed ' the present and preceding Victorian Ministry,
