[Bevteb’s Telegbams] London, July 17. Consols remain at 99}. New Zealand Securities Five per Cent. 1889 Loan advanced by |to 106}; and the One-and-a-half per Cent. 1899-1904 Loan advanced } to 10}; Five per Cent. 10-40 Loan remaining at 106}. Adelaide and New Zealand breadstuffs continue flrm at 535. for AdeIride, and 51s Gd for New Zealand, ex warehouse. Adelaide Flour, ex warehouse, remains at 38s Australian Tallow is also firm at 43s 6d for best beef, and 44s 6d for best mutton.
The Australian Cricketing Team commenced a match to-day against Eleven of Yorkshire at Bradford. There was a very large attendance, the weather being fine, but the wickets were heavy, owing to recent rain. The Visitors went in first, and were all disposed of for 132. Bannerman was the highest scorer with 42—caught. The Home Team then went in for their first innings, and had put together 25 runs for a loss of five wickets, when stumps were drawn for the day. The bowling of the Australians was dead on the wicket, and the Englishmen could not take liberties with it.
London, July 18. Intelligence is to hand from Ireland that there are signs of disease among potato crops, and it is feared that the season’s yield will be materially affected.
The Maori” deputation bearing a petition addressed to the Queen were to-day granted an interview by Earl Kimberly, and were introduced to His Lordship by ths Right Bev. A. B. Suter, Bishop of Nelson. Taiwhanga and Hori Mangihaka explained at length the grievances of the Natives of New Zealand, and presented their petition. The Secretary of State for the Colonies, said in reply, that he could only transmit the memorial to the Government of New Zealand, and request the opinion of the Colonial Executive, as to the allegations made by the petitioners, A portion of the cargo of froaen meat ex Orient, was sold by Auction to-day, and realised an average of 6|d per lb. In the House of Commons to-day, the Hon. John Bright explained that he disagreed with his former colleagues on the Government Benches solely with regard to the polioy they had decided upon pursuing in connection with the Egyptian question. Albant, July 18, The P. and 0. steamship Bahama, with inward mails via Sues and Brindisi, dated London, June 16th, arrived in King George's Sound this morning. London advices of that date to hand by this mail, state that the consignment of mutton, ex ship Dunedin, from New Zealand, caused considerable excitement in the Home markets, The fine parts of the oarcases were being sold by retail butchers at tenpence per lb. When the mail left, a oontro. versy was proceeding in the metropolitan journals, between landed proprie. tors whose interests are endangered, and butchers, with regard to prices of meat and the facility which the rapid development of frozen meat provision trade affords to persons of limited incomes to obtain Colonial meat of good quality at reasonable prices.
