TOLOGA BAY.
(fiiom oue own coeeespondent.) 7th July, 1882. To day was tho day fixed for the nomination of candidates for tlio Cook County Council, and Charles Gray, and John Lees Allanaoh have come forward. Tho election will take place on Saturday, tho 15th inst. It will be a good thing if wo can select a gentleman who will have at heart tho intoroste of tho district. Not only because ho happens to be at the head of tho poll, and has a seat at the County Board, but who lives in tho locality, knows tho wants of the district, can watch tho progress of works, that may be ordered, and to strive earnestly to promote tho welfare of tho district. It is all vary well for us to have a non-resident councillor to represent ns, but wo expect too much from human nature if wo think he can support propositions for our advancement if ho sees that the outlay- would prejudice some pot scheme of his own for works in his immediate locality. We wait with patience tho result of tho poll, and trust that our represontai|p.o will bo a gentleman having at heart more the progress of the district, than tho honor of being a County Councillor.
News, from further up tho coast, to hand informs us that the measles seam to hare attacked a number of Maori families, and the disease is pretty severe. Dr. Scott purposes going up on Monday, and it is to bo hoped ho may stay the progress of tho epidemic before it reaches much greater magnitude. The schooner Gisborne has just arrived hero, and is busily engaged in disohargi ng cargo. Sho expects to leave boro to-morrow for your port. The captain reports having experienced very bad weather indeed since Iw was lust hero.
