PINS IN THE BRAIN.

Thebe are some strange brains in America, and if the “ New York Tribune’s ” account of what happened to one Lewis E. Avery, a farmer, living at Gilman’s Depot, Sullivan County, be correct, that young gentleman—he was only eighteen—must have possessed one of them. It would appear that as long ago as last September he was playing with .a gun, when it burst and lodged the breach pin in his ekull, over the right eye. The wound healed, and he seemed as well as ever for a time, going about and transacting his business as usual, and even impressing his friends with the clearness of his intellect, until just lately, when he was taken ill and died. It was then found, on examination, that he had carried for six months, in the centre of his brain, an iron pin, four and a half inches long and half an inch in diameter, -without any discomfort. A brain that could achieve such a wonder as this must have been capable of better things, and it would seem to be a pity that Lewis E. Avery did not live longer. Many a man’s brain has been “ turned,” ere now, by a piece of good or ill fortune, a mere rise or a depression in circumstances, and even a little applause. But one that could bear the weight and disturbing influence of some ounces of cold iron without experiencing any ill effects for several months was worth preserving.
