Poverty Bay Standard. PUBLISHED EVERY TUESDAY, THURSDAY AND SATURDAY MORNINGS. TUESDAY, JULY 4, 1882.

A meeting of ratepayers was held in Messrs Parnell and Boylans hall last night, His Worship t e Mayor in t ie chair, to consider the necessity of contracting a £25,000 loan, for water supply. Mr J. Svmerve.l, Arciideaeon Williams, Captuiu Tucker, and Mr Burch opposed the loan as premature, while Messrs Townley and Carlaw Smith advocated the contraction of it as a vital necessity. We have neither time nor space to give a report of the meeting, suffice it to say that on the motion of Mr File, seconded by Mr Fryer, a resolution was put to the meeting to the effect that the scheme was premature, and the ratepayers were unable to bear the additional taxation it would entail. A show of hands was taken resulting in an almost unanimous dismissal of the scheme. That the ratepayers will eventually regret this summary dismissal of so important a question we do not for a moment doubt. The arguments advanced against the scheme savoured to us too much of personal and too little of public interest. However, “ they themselves have said it,” aad we hope they won’t growl when their property gets burned down or their health is attacked.
