THE PREMIER or NEW SOUTH WALES.
Tee impression which the Premier of New South Wales has made on the British public is by no means altogether favorable. Sir Henry Parkes strikes most people as being very bounceable, very talkative, and very conceited. At every possible opportunity he refers pompously to his wonderful rise in the world, and hints —if he does not absolutely say—that he is one of Australia’s greatest colonists. As a natural consequence, some folks are getting quite a wrong idea about Antipodeans. A gentleman said to me the other day, “ I was rather under the impression that the seifmade men of your part of the world were, if not particularly refined or intellectual at any rate shrew d and self-contained. This Parkes, however, appears to be a regular wind-bag.” There is a certain sort of superficial cleverness in his speeches, but they consist mainly of rather vulgar brag, as to the importance of the Colony he governs, and thinks that England must prepare ere long for separation from Australasia. This separalion talk is certainly in the worst possible taste, and will, I feel confident.be heartily by the majority of colonists. Beyond laughing a little at Sir Henry and his vain boasting, the English press has so far been very forbearing to the Premier of N.S.W., but I observe the “ Globe ” gives him a pretty severe roasting for his talk about separation.
