The Battery J Ball.

Never before in Gisboine has a newspaper writer been culled upon to record so great a success as that secured by the Battery J last evening at t .eir annual bull. Certainly they had the advantage of a magnificent hall which afforded scope for tJttJ VCPY vigorous dancet’g present, but in addition U? tlfig the ball committee hud at considerable trouble decorated the building so handsomely as to almost render it a fairy palace. Around the walls were sword and scabbard stars, whilst at the entrance, and overh-ad, festoons of Hags were artistically arranged, and the lighting having been carefully attended to, a tout ensemble never before witnessed in Gisborne, greeted the eye as one entered the Hall.

The J Battery Band, under the leadership of their clever conductor, Mr Thos. Faram, were comfortably ensconced in the gallery, and the acoustic properties of the hall being admirable, the sweet strains of music fell with a softness and mellowness upon tho cars of the waltzers below, and wafted them into an elysium of delight. The lloor was in perfect order, an I the ventilation perfect. As to who ■was the belle of the ball we are necessarily silent. They were to our mind all belles, aud the phalanx of beauty whic passed before our report rs bewildered, though delighted gaze, he assures us vies with anything he has ever yet seen. Messrs G. J. Winter, H. Boylan, E. Pavitt and J. Cresswell acted as mailres des ceremonies, and left nothing undone to secure the enjoyment of all. Then what can we say of the supper ? Mr James Craig, the caterer, earned for himself an additional

rung in tho ladder of reputation. The waiters were attentive, the viands of the best, and last, but not ieust, the cooking was admirable. Taking it all in all so enjoyable a ball bus never before been held in the Bay.
