THE J BATTERY BALL.
The Ladies, bless them, are in a state of “ delicious trembling.” The J Battery N.Z.V.A. are giving a Ball on the 28th inst., which is very close at hand. Dresses have been the order of the day, and the dressmaking force of Gisborne has been rushed with orders. The band of the corps is practising assiduously. About 400 invitations have been issued, and with the well-known abilities of Mr Craig to answer for the catering, there can be little hesitation in prophesying a
grand success for the event. The Ball Committee is composed of the officers and members of the corps, while the duties of Master of the Ceremonies have been undertaken by Captain Winter, Lieut. Boylan, Bombardier Cresswell, and Gunner Pavitt. The scene of action is Messrs Parnell and Boylan’s Masonic Hall, which has lately undergone extensive alterations and improvements under the auspices of Mr C. D. Berry, and now presents a totally different interior aspect. It may not be amiss here to give some slight description of the building, which is 120 feet long by 50 feet wide. There are shops each 22 feet by 18 feet on either side the entrance porch, which is 22 feet by 16 feet. There are also ticket offices, cloak room, and a large gallery. The space afforded for the public measures 70 feet by 50. The stage measures 50 feet by 24 feet. There is also a large room at the back for refreshment or supper room. The heigh th of the building in the centre is 25 feet in the clear. Ample provision has been made for ventilation by leaving a space at either end of the building, and the entire length, with falls made to open and shut easily. The doors are made to open outwards, and every means of egress is given to alleviate cases of fire or panic. Thus it will be seen that the owners, as also the architect (Mr W. P. Finneran) and contractor, have been thoroughly studious of public needs in the made to this structure, and we hope they will reap the reward that such enterprise richly deserves. We are quite sure that the bright smiles of the many pretty faces ornamenting this haH on the night of the Volunteer dance will gratify the gentlemen interested, and cause them to feel that one effort in the interests of the fair daughters of Eve is more amply repaid than a dozen in the interests of us who belong more exclusively to Adam. When the ladies learn the efforts that are being made on all sides for their delectation and amusement, we do not know the sex if the result is not something too utterly too utter 1!!
