(From Exchanges.) Fourteen hones faced the starter for last English Derby, won by Shotover. Mr H. Yeend’s horse Intrepid broke down badly while running in the Adelaide Steeplechase. The Christchurch Hunt Club have decided to hold a Steeplechase Meeting on the 13th of July, 1882. First Water, the winner of the Australian Cup in 1881, has been sold to Mr J. Saville, of Adelaide, for 575 guineas. Mr Thorough good, of Reefton has bought Volunteer from Messrs Mason and Vallance for the sum of 200 guineas. It is thought in sporting circles that Lord Burleigh, Commotion and Darebin will be amongst the top weights for the Melbourne Cup. Among the list of entries for the Melbourne Cup, appears the name of King Quail. This is Mr 8. T. Horsfall's grand little horse who won the last Auckland Cup. It is stated that Mr Ry mill refused £20,000 for his colt Bruce, who was such a favorite for the last English Derby. The colt has since won the Grand Prix de Paris. Martini-Henry, the colt by Musket —Sylvia, which was purchased by the Hon. J. White from the Auckland Stud Company, is among the 78 entries for the A.J.C. Derby of 1883. The well-known steeplechaser Sailor Buy so injured himself in the last Grand National Steeplechase that it is thought lie will not be able to run again for sometime to come. ► It was rumoured in Auckland lately that Percy Martin, MrC. C. Murray’s Trainer, was drowned in Napier at the late floods, it is however not true, he was only washed uff his horse. Rory Mclror, the well-known steeplechase rider, who has now settled down in Australia, rode Lucy in the late Adelaide Steeplechase and got a good second to Tom Corrigan, who rode Reform, the winner. Mr Joe Ellis has disposed of his steeplechaser Lone Hand to Mr W. Stock, of the Albion Hotel Napier. The price paid was £l2O, a further sum of £5O is to be paid if the old slave wins the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase. Sir Thomas Elder’s Bass an io has been backed for the next Melbourne Derby and Cup at 5000 to 50 to win the double. Segenhoe and The Duke and Navigator and The Duke have also been backed for several thousands for the same events. If the weights suit, there is every likelihood of the Hon. W. Robinson’s horses being sent over to represent New Zealand in the MelBourne Cup and other races. They will go in in charge of Dick Mason, who will train them for their engagements. “ Augur ” writing on Durebin’s victory says: “ That the performance was a most brilliant one, and quite entitled the son of the Peer to be considered the best horse in Australia up io one mile and three-quarters, though there •are s< me doubts as to his ability to go two miles.” Proctor the winner of the Brisbane Cup, must be able to travel, for ho accomplished the two miles in 3min. 3 s 'isec., with Bst 131bs in the,pigskin. Proctor also run a mile and a-half at the same meeting in the good time of 2min. 41 sec., with Bst lllbs up. He is ■engaged in the Melbourne Cup, and if he is H rested well, should be worth watching. F It is stated that Mr Pilbrow intends to nominate his steepfechaser Clarence for the Melbourne Grand National Steeplechase to be run at Flemington in July. This horse has proved himself a most brilliant animal over country, and if lie is at all fairly treated in the handicap, will leave for Melbourne at an •early date, and with a good man up, may be depended on to run a great race with the Victorian ttacka.
