TOLOGA BAY.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) June 13, 1882. About the longest spell of wet weather experienced here for many years has just passed. For six days rain fell almost without ceasing, and, as may naturally be anticipated, the country, and especially the lower portions, have suffered considerably. The roads are in a very bad condition, and there is little prospect of any improvement in them during the next three or four months. Mr Reeves, one of our local sheepfarmers, has suffered no small loss from the ravages of dogs amongst his flock. Somewhere about thirty have fallen victims to canine rapaciousness, and against this Mr Reeves has scored two points on the dog side, and still needs to keep sharp watch. Dogs are a pest in this district, and I think I might venture to say not one half are registered. An amusing occurrence took place the other day at our Post Office. An individual enquiring for letters had two in large official envelopes presented to him. “ What’s them things about ?” he asked of the Postmaster ? “ I’m sure I do not know,” was the reply. “ Then I don’t think I’ll take them till I know what’s inside,” replied he, and casting a look of suspicion at them, he left them on the counter and departed.
