[from our own correspondent]. London, June 16. The Khedive and Dervish Pasha have requested the Sultan to despatch 18,000 troops to Egypt. The proposition to hold a Conference for the settlement of the Egyptian question is now gaining fresh prominence in European political circles. The sculling match between Largan and Pearce for £lOO side was rowed on the Thames to-day, and was won oasily by the former. June 17. Great efforts are being made to push the Irish Repression Bill through Parliament, and its provisions are daily, disscussed in the House of Commons. The police to-day effected a seizure at Clerkenwell of a large quantity of arms which were known to have been intended for shipment to Ireland. The Orient steamship Cuzco, which left Melbourne on tho Ist of May, arrived at Plymouth to-day. Her cargo of frozen meat is reported to be in excellent condition. New Zealand securities are unchanged. Adelaide wheat, ex store, 51s; New Zealand ditto declined to 50s. Adelaide flour, ex store, is 355. The total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britain is 2,920,000 quarters, being 10,000 quarters less than the quantity last week. Alexandria, June 15. Two hundred natives have been arrested in connection with the recent outbreak. A commission has been appointed to enquire into the cause of recent native riot, and attack upon Europeans. Telegrams are {to hand stating that active preparations are proceeding at the chief European ports in the Mediterranean for the immediate despatch of several vessels with ample accommodation. The greatest alarm and excitement prevails amongst the Europeans here. Cairo, June 17The panic among the Europeans is hourly increasing, and all the foreign banks and shops in this city have been closed. Great alarm is manifested by the Europeans at the hostile demeanour of the population, and a great exodus of the former to Alexandria is taking place. Malta, June 16. The English Channel Squadron has arrived hero to reinforce the Mediterranean Squadron at Alexandra. Several British transports are also here and are embarking troops in view of possible contingencies in Egypt. Melbourne, June 17. Great uncertainty exists as to the final issue of the present political crisis, rumors of coalition being unceasingly circulated ; but at the same time it is in well-informed quarters deemed possible that a compromise will be effected between the Government and Mr Francis. June 19. It has transpired that informal negotiations have been opened between the supporters of the Government and Mr Francis, with a view to an understanding being arrived at in regard to Budget proposals ; and an interview is known to have taken place between Mr Francis and Sir Bryan O’Loghlan with reference to the position of affairs.
