Found Dead.
Ax unfortunate man known as James Campbell, but whom we have learned is in reality named Burnham Campbell, was discovered on the sloping portion of the river bank at the foot of Derby-street, dead, yesterday morning. The deceased was well known in the Bay, having been a resident of the outdistrict for some years, and having worked for several of the country settlers. He was formerly a member of the Police Force in Napier. When discovered yesterday morning by Mr George Cooper, he was lying as before stated on the bank sloping towards the Taruheru river, and had, when the body was searched by Constable Farmer who received the first information, near him, an untouched flask of brandy, a bottle partly tilled with whiskey, and two medicine bottles. That the death had been an easy one was clear, the grass near being altogether undisturbed, and showed no sign of a struggle having taken place. The body was subsequently removed by direction of Sergt. Bullen to the Royal Hotel, where Dr Pollen held a post mortem examination yesterday afternoon. We are indebted to his courtesy for the following particulars: —On opening the head and removing a portion of the skull he found the cause of death to be apoplexy. The brain was very small indeed, and had evidently been softening for some time. On the left ear there was a bruise as if from a fall. The body was, subsequent to the examination, placed in a coffin at about 3.30 p.m., and now awaits a Coroner’s inquest, which will be held at 11 o’clock this forenoon.
